ASCEA

Ascea is a charming town in Cilento, located along the Tyrrhenian coast, in the heart of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. It comprises several hamlets, including Ascea Marina, the main seaside resort; the ancient village of Ascea Paese; and Velia with its archaeological excavations. Other hamlets include Catona, Mandia, Terradura, and Stampella. The area perfectly combines sea, nature, and ancient history. The wide, golden beaches, mild climate, and strategic location make Ascea a tourist hotspot in the area, offering both relaxation and cultural experiences.
The History of Elea–Velia: From Its Origins to the Present
The Ascea area is home to one of the most important archaeological sites in the Mediterranean: Elea–Velia, founded in the 6th century BC by Greek exiles from Phocaea. The city became famous in the ancient world as the birthplace of the Eleatic School, a philosophical movement founded by Parmenides and Zeno, which contributed decisively to the development of Western thought.
During the Roman period, Velia maintained a central role thanks to its port and the important patrician families who chose it as their residence. In the following centuries, due to the silting up of the coastline and invasions, the city gradually lost importance until it disappeared under layers of earth and vegetation.
Archaeological excavations begun in the 19th century have uncovered an extraordinary heritage: the Porta Rosa, the first known example of a round arch in Magna Graecia, the acropolis, the baths, the fortifications, and traces of the ancient port. Today Elea-Velia is an archaeological park of international importance and represents the heart of the identity of the municipality of Ascea.
Local Characteristics
Ascea is distinguished by a landscape that harmoniously blends sea, hills, and pristine natural areas. The coast is characterized by long, sandy beaches that have repeatedly received the Blue Flag, while the hinterland offers scenic trails perfect for hiking, biking, and strolling through the Mediterranean scrub.
The town is well-connected thanks to the Ascea train station, which makes traveling throughout the Cilento region easy. Ascea Marina is the modern tourist center, with beaches, accommodations, restaurants, and shops, while Ascea Paese preserves the Cilento architectural tradition with narrow streets, small squares, and a more intimate, historic atmosphere.
Culture and Traditions
Ascea's culture intertwines Greek, Roman, and Cilento influences, giving rise to a rich and diverse identity. Traditions revolve around agricultural and maritime life, with deeply felt patron saint festivals and religious celebrations, including those of Sant'Antonio R'Austo in Ascea Paese and the Feast of Maria SS. in Portosalvo, with its famous procession by sea and through the town's streets. Among the most representative products are extra virgin olive oil, Cilento white figs, oily fish, and Mediterranean cuisine, simple yet rich in authentic flavors.
Cultural vibrancy is also important: in the summer, the area hosts musical events, shows, historical reenactments, and initiatives related to the Elea-Velia Archaeological Park, which is promoted through guided tours, immersive experiences, and educational activities. The legacy of Eleatic philosophy continues to be a source of pride and a draw for scholars and visitors from around the world.
